Berner Würstel is the name for Viennese or Frankfurter sausages that have been cut open lengthwise and filled with strips of cheese (usually Emmental) and wrapped in smoked bacon. However, Berner sausages do not come from Switzerland – as the name suggests – but from Zell am See in Austria and are named after their inventor, the chef Erich Berner senior.
